Bathroom Organization Overhaul

Hi you guys and welcome back to my blog! This is the first blog post of my much needed home organization series. After binging every episode of The Home Edit over the winter break, I simply couldn’t function with the chaos of my bathroom! If you want to watch the video version, click the link below or read on to hear about my full bathroom transformation.

If you haven’t seen The Home Edit yet, you need to go check it out after you finish reading this post! It centres around home organization. One thing I learned in my interior design schooling was merchandising (specifically store merchandizing). The Home Edit has an interesting way of introducing these store merchandising concepts into the home. This makes so much sense to me as it allows you to see everything better and encourages you to actually use and enjoy what you have, since everything is displayed so nicely!

I updated our bathroom last spring by painting the cabinets and taking the doors off our wall storage unit. I really liked the idea of open shelving, however when I put my toiletries on the shelves it wasn’t as aesthetically pleasing as I imagined in my mind. After watching The Home Edit it really opened my eyes to how my space SHOULD look and function.

The first step in my organizational plan was purchasing the supplies. I spent about $200 and got various containers (ranging from clear, hidden, and basket type). I also purchased a bamboo shoe rack to provide a little more shelf space underneath my “banjo” style countertop.

Next I started what they call in the show “The Edit”, which consists of taking all your items off the shelves and sorting them. This was OBVIOUSLY the worst part of the process as things are strung all over the bathroom and house, I was amazed by just how much garbage I had been trying to store. This also gave me a great opportunity to take inventory of what I had, and allowed me to finally see items I had kept shoved in the back of my cabinets.

The fun part of the process was taking my new containers and sorting all my items into their own little compartments! I am particularly proud of my use of baskets in my space. I used one for all my toilet paper rolls (so much neater than a metal roll holder). My second basket I used in my vanity to store all my hair styling tools, this was the easiest way to hide all the cords but still functional for everyday use. I also sorted my items into categories; things I use daily I put on the open shelves, items I use infrequently I stuck in the hidden storage on my bamboo shoe rack, and bulkier items I put in my vanity (hairstyling tools, garbage can, and spa toiletries).

When it came to our families shared necessity storage, I used a “Lazy Susan” style rolling container. This worked perfectly for all my makeup, my husbands everyday products, and our toothbrush station. Though this is not the most glamorous way of storing these products, I really love the ease of access to everything when getting ready. It is also completely fool proofed for my husband to keep his items organized.

Overall I am so happy I organized this space! Our bathroom is very small and never functioned as best it could. Since properly organizing it, we are finally able to keep the shelves and counter clutter free. To really give it that last spa touch I finished the space with new towels, a plant, and of course a candle… Can you say Ahhhhhhh!

Here is a before and after comparison of the space. Next on the list will be the kitchen and pantry - be sure to stay tuned for those!
